Umucyo Foundation

About Us

Our Story

The Umucyo Foundation is a channel of light and empowerment for the Rwandese community in the UK, particularly women and young people. Established in 2019 by Gisele and Pascaline, two Rwandese residing in London, our organisation is rooted in a profound mission encapsulated in the name “Umucyo,” which signifies “a light” in Kinyarwanda.

There is a pressing need to address mental health issues in the Rwandan community, where the word “mental health “ is deemed taboo. Our focus is on
women and young people by offering a safe place to have that first conversation about mental health or any other challenges that life brings. We set out to equip them with the tools, opportunities, and unwavering support needed to help them overcome these challenges.

Our work is focused on three key areas: mental health education and the return-to-work pathway. Although our primary objective is to help women and young people of Rwandese origin, we will also welcome those from BAME communities who may be experiencing similar challenges.

Steps to getting better: emotional well-being groups, physical activities, peer support groups, family mediation, and counselling.

Our Purpose

At Umucyo Foundation, our purpose is to support Rwandese women and youth in the UK battling mental health issues. We understand the challenges that this community often faces, and we are dedicated to providing a safe environment where they can find help, guidance, and essential tools to overcome mental
health issues and other challenges they might face .

Our goal is to empower and uplift, offering not just a safe space but also the knowledge, skills, and support required to not only cope with life’s challenges but to lead successful, resilient, and fulfilling lives. We believe that every individual, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to thrive, and our purpose is to guide them on their journey to self-discovery and personal growth.

Our Mission

Umucyo Foundation supports Rwandese women and young people who live in the UK and who are experiencing mental health issues. Our support comprises counselling and mentorship; working out a pathway to employment; and encouraging physical activities and exercise.
